Australian folk singer-songwriter Jesse Taylor is a really interesting case. I have only featured two of his songs on my channel – ‘I Found My Way’ in my January 2016 compilation, and again exactly a year later with ‘Coastline’ in the January 2017 comp – but chances are that you won’t just have heard Jesse’s music before (since both of these January videos have around 1 million views), but you will fondly remember it; his tracks are so easy to get lost in and once they enter your ears, there’s no way to get them out. I sat down with this Aussie indie prodigy a few weeks ago to find out how we started in music, what albums he’s enjoying right now and when we can expect to hear some new tunes, as there’s no way I’m waiting until next January to feature another song! Read on below…

Hi Jesse! We already know your name haha, but just for completeness, what’s your name and age?

My name is Jesse Taylor and I am a young 23 years of age.

Lovely, thank you! When did you first know you wanted to make music?

It was in 2011 and my mum bought me a guitar for my birthday and so I decided to join the music classes at the high school I was at and from then on I was hooked.

Wow! It actually feels like you’ve been playing longer than that, since you sound so accomplished at what you do. So, what are three words to describe your sound for someone who’s never heard it before?

I guess the music I am currently writing is mostly indie folk/surf stuff but I have experimented in blues, souls and folk rock. So yeah, a mix of those.

Agreed! If you could tour with any band/artist, who would it be?

Without a doubt I would tour with Matt Corby and/or Angus Stone.

Great taste, I would love to go to that tour! I hear you’re currently working on new music! How is that going? How would you say the new material compares to what you’ve released in the past?

Yeah, I am working on a new EP which is halfway done. I have been writing a lot for it lately, just trying to go with the flow and figure out what sounds right and relatable. I would say the new stuff is pretty much indie folk and surf vibes.

Man I am so so hyped for that EP – it may just be my most anticipated release of the year (no pressure! 😜). Onto other bands now – which albums are you really into right now?

Lately I am really digging some Ben Howard. I’ve also been re-listening to Fleet Foxes album ‘Helplessness Blues’.

Awesome, Ben Howard is soooo good! Here’s a big question: what are your current plans for the future?

That is a big question. Lately things have been in the air. But I am definitely planning to go on tour and to release my new EP sometime through 2017. I have a music video for a new single that I am planning to release soon and yeah at the moment I am just riding out on my single ‘Coastline’.

Perfect! Well hopefully my features of ‘Coastline’ have helped and I will be patiently awaiting some new stuff whenever you put it out. Finally, any last words?

I’d just really like to say thank you. Thank you to Alex Rainbird so much for the support, it’s honestly helped me so much. I’d also like to say thank you to everyone who supports indie music because its not an easy industry to be in. Cheers!

Aww thank you Jesse, it is my pleasure! My audience is the best – when I started my YouTube channel six years ago, I never knew that there were so many potential indie fans around the world; they’ve honestly surprised me! Cheers for doing this interview and good luck with the new music!
