The Runaway Club has long been a mainstay of alexrainbirdMusic, first featuring way back in October 2014 and most recently just a few months ago. To find out why this is, check out my interview with them below…
Hi! What’s your name, age and role in The Runaway Club?
My name is Alan Poettcker. I’m 30. I write/produce/record everything in The Runaway Club.
Woah! Can you give me three words to describe The Runaway Club’s music for someone who’s never heard of it?
Indie-pop, 80’s, synthwave.
Sounds good to me. What’s your best achievement so far as The Runaway Club?
When I was working on the song “I Don’t Care” my 1 year old boy came into the room and started dancing.
Aww that’s cute! I’m sure the readers would be interested in your songwriting process, could you describe this for me? For example, do you write the lyrics before the music?
I usually sit down at a synthesizer and play some chords. See if that sparks an idea for a vocal melody and lyric. When I get a vocal idea I record it right away and build the track as fast as I can. I try and keep the original vibe of the track going the entire time.
Nice. Do you have a favourite song on your new album?
“When We Were Kids”. They’re my favourite lyrics I’ve written. There’s no drums on the track. It’s never going to be a single but it opens the album nicely. I’ve written and recorded a lot of garbage in my day but I’m pretty proud of that song.
That’s one of my favourites too! Love the slower vibe, it really makes the song stand out. Finally, what are your plans for the future of The Runaway Club?
I was in a band on a major label for a long time. There was a large team deciding when, what and how we released music. I love being an indie artist. The freedom is great. I’m not sure what I’ll do next… I want to record an album on a 4 track cassette recorder. That would be fun.
Any last words?
Thanks for having me! 🙂
