Philidelphia-based indie outfit YOUTHFOOL first appeared on alexrainbirdMusic less than a month ago, but have already been lauded heavily throughout my network. Taking inspiration from 80’s and 90’s music, the band have been described as ‘The 1975 for grown-ups‘ and have a distinctly retro vibe to their catchy tunes. After releasing a slew of singles last year, YOUTHFOOL released their debut eight-track EP a few days ago and following that, vocalist/guitarist/producer/all-round great guy Joston sat down with me to talk about the origins, the new EP and future of his band! Read on below…
Hi Joston! Just so the readers know, what is your name and age? Tell me a little bit about yourself!
My names Joston Michael, I’m 27 and I’m from Philadelphia, PA. I’m the singer/guitarist and songwriter for the pop band YOUTHFOOL.
Thanks! So when did you first know you wanted to make music?
I’ve always loved music. The way music makes you feel and move is unlike anything else. None of my family played music or took instruments seriously. But, my credit would have to go to my mom. She was a professional tap dancer. Growing up listening to Michael Jackson, INXS, Scritti Politti, Alexander O’Neil and other legends, I always knew I loved music but never attempted to play it. Being the youngest of three, my siblings always had classic 80’s and 90’s music playing. It’s what shaped my fashion, attitude and influences at such a young age. Around 2015 is when I realized that making the type of music I was so inspired to was actually possible.
That’s amazing, kudos to you! Transitioning from music lover to musician is a dream of so many, so congrats on making it happen. Onto YOUTHFOOL now; can you please give me three words to describe your sound for someone who’s never heard it before?
Your Favourite Band
Haha I love it! You’ve a handful of awesome singles over the last few months; do you have a favourite song out of these tracks? Any ones in particular for readers to check out to best introduce them to YOUTHFOOL?
I think the singles are great. I truly do love each and every one of them in their own separate way. “That Strange Talk!” is a great pop song. It’s high in energy and keeps the momentum consistently. “Better Off Dead.” Is my personal favourite. The way the song came to me and ended up sounding was perfect for me. Instead of coming out with a heavy hitting pop song as our debut single, I chose a 5min beautiful ballad. “The Only One” is almost like “That Strange Talk”’s little brother in a sense. It has a very similar energy. The guitar solo is the icing on the cake for me. That song is a great song to hear live. Lastly, “What It Means To Love“. That song was a song that I always wanted to write but never knew how. I never attended my high school dances like homecoming and what not. So, in a sense, WIMTL is the theme song to my romantic ass high school prom dance that I never had.
Thanks for that insight man. I love the singles and ‘Better Off Dead.’ is my favourite too! You’ve also just released an EP right? How would you say the new material compares to the previous singles?
The “Before You Leave” EP (which you can listen to here) is incomparable to any other material we’ve released yet. Actually, the EP was written far before the singles. I personally have a strong attachment to this record. It has a very emotional, dark, ambient sounding mood throughout the length of the album. I believe it’s necessary. The EP is strictly from the heart. It touches on issues and moods that the singles just didn’t couldn’t handle. I’m quite nervous yet excited to see the response it receives.
Agreed! I’ve listened to the EP a few times and I like the darker, ambient vibe. I’m sure your fans (and mine!) will dig it too! So following the EP release, what are plans for the rest of 2017?
Shows, shows and more shows! I would love to get a music video under our belt and get some press. I want 2018 to be our year.
It definitely will, I am certain of it! Finally, any last words?
Thank you to everyone who supports YOUTHFOOL and is helping us get our name out there. Thanks man!
My pleasure Joston, very happy to help! You more than deserve the exposure 😃
